Recycling & Salvage Remodeling
Recycle for a Greener Home

The key to green remodeling and construction is conserving materials, which can be accomplished by simply reducing the amount of waste by reusing the as many materials as possible or by recycling materials.  Something very few people realize is that several types of building products can be reused and or recycled.  This will not only help homeowners and developers save money but will also help the environment.

When starting a remodeling project—Stop and Look!  Before you decide to sledgehammer anything, check to see if there is a business or center in your area that either purchases or will take used appliances off your hands.  This will keep your old cabinets, plumbing fixtures, lighting fixtures etc out of the landfill.  In addition, many times it will also put a little money in your pocket as a charitable donation.  Another option is for you to either reuse the items in other parts of your home or you can sale or traded them through the Internet.

To save you money, chose products and materials for your own home from salvage, resale and antique stores. Trust me, you can find a one-of-a-kind fixture for your kitchen, or bathroom.  You can also find reclaimed pine and hardwood flooring.  You can find recycled materials through materials exchange business, as well as through Reuse stores, and Salvage stores.  Other options are through the Internet at such sites as E-bay, and surplus sites.

However, don’t expect to walk into a salvage store and expect to find antique heart pine planking for your kitchen floor at a cheap price, but you might be able to find it at a very reasonable price.
