Ways to Make Your Dishwasher
Greener and More Energy Efficient

Dishwashers consume large amounts of water, and energy and use chemicals that may harm the environment.  However, they do save us valuable time and help to reduce the spread of bacteria and viruses, which have made dishwashing machines the norm for the many homes worldwide.  When properly maintained, dishwashers can be made to be more environmentally friendly, or greener than if you hand-washed your daily dishes and cookware.

The following are some "Going Green" tips and advice that can help you make your dishwasher greener and more energy efficient.

Go for the Star—Energy Star that is:  When purchasing a dishwasher, always make sure that it is an Energy Star rated appliance, which use approximately 25% less energy than the mandated minimum.

Full is Always Better than Half:  Running your dishwasher when it is full will help save you the most energy, water, as well as detergent.

Go natural:  Use dishwashing liquid or powder that is natural or biodegradable.  These cleaners are free of petroleum and phosphates. If you are concerned about spotting problems try using a natural residue eliminator such as Wave Jet.

Bigger is not always Better:  Make sure that you select the right size dishwasher to met your needs.  If you are a family of four and purchase a compact dishwasher you may be wasting energy if you have to run it several times a day, just as single person would be wasting money by purchasing a large size dishwasher.

One glass a day:  Try to use less dishes and glasses throughout the day so that you won’t be running your dishwasher but every other day or so.

Wash your dishes at night and save money:  Many electric and gas companies have started charging their customers different rates for energy usage such as hot water during off-peak hours such as over night.  If you are not sure, if your energy provider offers this money saving benefit contact them.

Time for an upgrade:  If your dishwasher is more than 10 years old, consider donating it to a charity and purchasing you a newer, more energy efficient model. It’s a fact that the dishwashers that are available today use much less water and energy than models that were sold 10 years ago.  Buy upgrading your dishwasher you’ll not only be saving water and energy but you’ll also save money on your utility bills.

If possible, Choose Natural Gas:  Generally, natural gas appliances are more energy efficiently than appliances that use electricity. Consumer Reports estimates that the average cost of operating a dishwasher that uses gas ranges from $25 to $67 annually.  In comparison, the estimated cost to operate an electric dishwasher is approximately $30 to $86 annually.
